Ogunmodede declares Remo Stars versus Bendel Insurance as ‘World Cup final’

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Remo Stars coach, Daniel Ogunmodede has described his side’s next Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) game with Bendel Insurance as a World Cup final.
Both topflight sides will next Saturday meet in the top-of-the-game clash at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City with their perfect record on the tray.
Ogunmodede while speaking with journalists after his team’s 2-0 win over Shooting Stars in Wednesday South West Derby is not taking the game with kid gloves.
“I only know that there is only one match left for us to play and it’s our next match. That’s the mentality in the camp. A match at a go and at once. I don’t know if any other game exists but our World Cup final is on Saturday in Benin. We know we are underdogs by appearance. Deep inside us, we are a working lion,” he told Nigeriafootball.ng.
“Although we didn’t score in the first half but in all, it was a good performance. Unfortunately, we lose too many chances in the first half but the good thing is we created the chances and in the end, it paid off. Shooting came with the intention to want to win. It’s a derby game. It can go either way.”
An own goal from Alex Aghahowa and Godwin Odibo’s strike ensured that the Sky Blue Stars earned its third straight league wins after the first three games of the campaign.
While admitting the fact that his team is in a tough group, Ogunmodede pledges to take each game as they come in a bid to finish well at the end of the season.
“We know that before now. It’s just like we going to Ibadan now. It’s also possible for us to win. They tried to put a lot of numbers in our goal area,” he continued.
“We saw that in the second half and tried to equal the number in order to catch them with the counter which works magic for us. The end is going to justify the means. For now, I can’t promise anything. I can only promise you every game as it goes. We want to go on to win every game.
“We are in a tough group with top personalities. We have Enyimba, Shooting Stars, Nasarawa United, Plateau United, and Akwa United. Imagine in our next home game we are playing Akwa United. It’s a tough group and the end is going to justify the means,” he concluded.
The Ikenne-based side will next face Bendel Insurance in Benin before hosting Akwa United.
