Olawale Onanuga: Nigerian midfielder leaves Kapaz PFK to become a free agent

Nigerian defensive midfielder Olawale Onanuga has left Azerbaijani side Kapaz PFK and become a free agent after his contract with the Premyer Liqa club came to an end.

The 28-year-old, born in Lagos and standing at 1.80m, departs Kapaz with his market value currently listed at €300,000. A right-footed holding midfielder, he is now without a club following the formal completion of his move away on 16 July 2026.

Onanuga rejoined Kapaz in August 2025 from Israeli outfit Bnei Yehuda, where he had arrived earlier that year from Al-Nasr SC. His latest spell in Azerbaijan followed an initial free transfer to Kapaz in 2023 after two seasons in Albania with KS Kastrioti.

During his time in the Premyer Liqa, Onanuga established himself as a consistent presence in midfield, amassing 55 league appearances and three goals, along with one assist, in Azerbaijan’s top flight. He also featured in the Azerbaijan Cup, adding further minutes in domestic knockout competition.

Before moving to Azerbaijan, Onanuga built his reputation in Albania’s Kategoria Superiore with KS Kastrioti, making 58 league appearances and scoring once. His performances there helped secure the move that first took him to Kapaz and into the Premyer Liqa.

The Nigerian has also gained experience in Israel’s second tier, Liga Leumit, clocking up 17 appearances for Bnei Yehuda as part of a career that has taken him across several leagues and cup competitions.

Onanuga now officially leaves Kapaz PFK as a free agent and is available to join a new club.
