Olympiakos to get the nod over PAOK

Wednesday evening brings us action from the Greek top flight with a top of the table clash between 2nd placed PAOK and the leaders of the Championship Group, Olympiakos, when the two teams face off at the Stadio Toumbas.

PAOK trail their Wednesday night’s visitors, Olympiakos, by a significant 13-point margin and this hasn’t been helped by the fact that PAOK have failed to win any of their last three matches in the Greek Super League, having lost two and drawn one of these three games.

Back-to-back defeats against Panathinaikos and Aris have been followed by a 1-1 draw at home with second from bottom side, AEK Athens.

And these recent results are in stark contrast to PAOK’s previous form.

The hosts had previously put together an impressive 16-match unbeaten run in the Greek domestic top flight.

But having collected just one point from the last possible nine on offer, along with failing to beat Olympiakos in each of their last four meetings, PAOK look to have their work cut out if they’re to get anything out of this encounter.

Olympiakos are way ahead of the rest of the competition as the visitors sit top of the Greek Championship Group and it’s only a matter of time before they claim the all-important Champions League qualifying berth.

Indeed, all three points at the Stadio Toumbas on Wednesday night against their hosts, PAOK, would seal their place in next season’s qualifying rounds of the elite European club competition.

And having suffered just two defeats throughout the whole of this Super League campaign, Olympiakos look set for further success here.

Such has been Olympiakos’s virtual dominance in the Greek top flight that the bigger picture shows that the visitors have lost just twice in their last 37 matches overall and it’s this kind of form which has placed Olympiakos in very strong contention for Champions League football for next season.

Olympiakos have also failed to win their last three matches away from home though, suffering defeats on the road at Aris and Panathinaikos, while picking up just a point in a 1-1 draw at PAS Giannina, so the visitors are expected to be fully focused for this upcoming clash.

Olympiakos are unbeaten in the last four meetings against PAOK and the visitors look the more likely for the win here.
