As the United States National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) prepares to kick off its 2024 season this month, the spotlight will be on 12 African players who are poised to make their mark in the American league.

Nigeria leads the pack with the highest number of representatives, boasting five talented players.

Asisat Oshoala joins Bay FC alongside Nicole Payne at Portland Thorns, adding to the Nigerian contingent that includes Ifeoma Onumonu (N/Y Gotham FC), Michelle Alozie (Houston Dash), and Uchenna Kanu (Racing Louisville).

Zambia follows closely with two most-expensive players in the world, as Barbra Banda joins Orlando Pride and Rachael Kundananji signs for Bay FC.

Other African nations also have representatives in the NWSL, including Estelle Johnson from Cameroon (Gotham FC), Linda Motlhalo from South Africa (Racing Louisville), Jassmina Barhoumi from Tunisia (Moyne Dolphins), and Princess Marfo from Ghana (Bay FC).

With the 2024 NWSL season set to commence next week, fans can expect to witness the exceptional talent and skill of some of Africa’s finest women footballers as they take the field in the USA on March 16.
