Paris 2024 Qualifiers: Ashleigh Plumptre upbeat ahead of Cameroon clash in Abuja

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria defender, Ashleigh Plumptre is confident her team can get a win in the return leg of the Paris 2024 Olympics Qualifiers against Cameroon in Abuja on Monday.

The Super Falcons and Indomitable Lionesses fought to a 0-0 draw in the 2024 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament third round, first-leg encounter in Douala on Friday.

Plumptre who returned to the team for the first time since the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup says the focus is to qualify Nigeria for the Olympics.

Doing that will end the team’s 16-year wait to make it to the Olympics.

“We will take it game by game. Obviously, the target is to qualify for the Olympics. We have not been at the Olympics, I don’t know for how long,” Plumptre told the media after the first leg encounter on Friday.

“So we don’t look past the game we have now. The focus now is on Cameroon. Obviously, there are more qualifying games to come.

“We will put on a performance like we did today in the second leg. Getting a draw is good. We didn’t get a win today but we will try and do that next time.

“We will take the performance to the next game and obviously we will win and make it to the next round. We will take it game by game.”

Both teams clash in the second leg at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Monday evening.
