Paris Saint-Germain made Champions League history by scoring four times in just 16 minutes and two seconds during their league-phase meeting with Villarreal.

The French side produced a remarkable attacking burst in the fourth round of the competition, with Joao Neves opening the scoring in the ninth minute.

Desire Doue doubled their advantage three minutes later before Senny Mayulu added a third in the 13th minute. Fabian Ruiz completed the four-goal sequence in the 17th minute, giving Paris Saint-Germain an unprecedented record in the tournament.

According to statistics from Mister Chip, Paris Saint-Germain are now the fastest team to score four goals in a Champions League match. Their achievement came away from home and surpassed the previous record held by Real Madrid.

Real Madrid scored four times in 20 minutes against Dinamo Zagreb in November 2011. Paris Saint-Germain’s four-goal spell was completed in 16 minutes and two seconds.

The French club also set another Champions League record by becoming the first team to score three away goals within the opening 13 minutes of a match.

That mark had previously belonged to Borussia Dortmund, who scored three times in the first 17 minutes against Legia Warsaw in 2016.

Paris Saint-Germain’s early scoring run also placed them alongside another French club in the competition’s record books. They became only the second side from France to score four goals within the opening 20 minutes of a Champions League match.

The first was Stade de Reims, who achieved the feat against Ards of Northern Ireland on 8 October 1958, according to Stats Foot.

The four goals at Villarreal also extended Paris Saint-Germain’s strong scoring record in this season’s league phase. After four rounds, they have scored 18 goals, their highest-ever total at this stage of the competition.

That figure moved them beyond their previous best of 17 goals, recorded during the group stage of the 2017-2018 season.
