Former Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has honored the memory of the late Peter Rufai, advocating for the former goalkeeper to be commemorated.
Rufai, a legendary figure in Nigerian football, passed away on Thursday following a lengthy illness.
Eguavoen, who played alongside Rufai, referred to him as an icon and proposed that a stadium or statue be constructed in his memory.
“He should be immortalised… A stadium or statue should be erected somewhere, it won’t be too much,” Eguavoen stated during an interview on Channels Television.
Eguavoen also conveyed his sorrow regarding Rufai’s death, mentioning that had Rufai spoken about his illness and sought financial help, Nigerians would have come together to support him.
“If he spoke out and needed N100 million, I don’t think Nigerians would be silent. One or two persons would raise that money. It’s quite unfortunate what happened has happened.”
Rufai died on the dame day as Liverpool star, Diogo Jota spurring mourning from international football community.
