Portuguese party calls for Morocco to be removed from 2030 World Cup bid

A Portuguese political party has called for Morocco to be removed from the 2030 World Cup hosting arrangement because of the recent migration crisis in the city of Ceuta.

The LIVRE party said Portugal should end its involvement in co-hosting the tournament with Morocco, arguing that recent events had raised serious concerns about the country’s suitability to stage the competition.

The crisis in Ceuta has prompted strong reactions in several European countries. The response has extended beyond politics and into the plans for the 2030 World Cup, which is due to be hosted jointly by Morocco, Portugal and Spain.

In a letter published by the party’s spokesman, Jorge Pinto, LIVRE urged Portugal to withdraw from the current hosting arrangement, according to French broadcaster RMC.

“In light of recent events, the need for a courageous decision is clear: Portugal cannot take part in jointly organising the 2030 World Cup with Morocco,” Pinto said.

“LIVRE will do everything in its power to prevent the organisation of this event from becoming associated with a country that has shown neither competence nor trustworthiness.”

Pinto also referred to the original proposal for the tournament, which involved Portugal, Spain and Ukraine.

“The initial proposal was for Portugal, Spain and Ukraine to organise the 2030 World Cup. For valid reasons, Ukraine left the bid and Morocco took its place. But this option is no longer sustainable today,” he said.

Morocco’s inclusion in the 2030 hosting plan followed Ukraine’s departure from the original proposal. The tournament arrangement was subsequently built around Morocco, Portugal and Spain.

RMC reported that removing Morocco’s hosting rights would be extremely difficult at this stage. It pointed to the limited time remaining before the tournament and the continued progress of infrastructure projects linked to the competition.

The broadcaster also said Morocco had strengthened Gianni Infantino’s position within FIFA during the recent crisis. As long as the Swiss official remains president of world football’s governing body, Morocco’s chances of losing its hosting rights are considered to be almost non-existent.

RMC added that Morocco’s position could even improve. It reported that the country’s chances of hosting the World Cup final might increase, potentially at Spain’s expense.

The 2030 World Cup is therefore at the centre of a growing political dispute, despite preparations for the tournament continuing and infrastructure work remaining under way.

LIVRE’s demand represents a challenge to the existing hosting agreement, but there was no indication in the report that FIFA or the other host countries had taken steps to alter the current plan.
