Rinsola Babajide wins Player of the Match as Nigeria beat Egypt 6-2 at WAFCON 2026
Rinsola Babajide was named Player of the Match after helping Nigeria reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a 6-2 victory over Egypt in Morocco.
The Super Falcons forward provided two assists in a commanding Group C performance at the Stade Olympique de Rabat, as Justin Madugu’s side secured their place in the knockout stage.
Nigeria took control of the high-stakes contest and ultimately finished with an emphatic victory, despite Egypt scoring twice during the match. The result also confirmed Nigeria’s progress alongside Malawi, while Zambia crashed out of the competition.
Asisat Oshoala gave Nigeria the lead in the 21st minute from the penalty spot. The decision followed a VAR review, which confirmed that the ball had struck an Egyptian hand inside the penalty area.
That early breakthrough strengthened Nigeria’s grip on the game, with the Super Falcons continuing to apply pressure and create the platform for a decisive result. Egypt, who had already been eliminated from the tournament before the match, were unable to prevent Nigeria from extending their advantage.
The North Africans did manage to score in the 45th minute, ensuring that Nigeria did not go into the interval with complete control of the scoreline. Egypt later added a second goal from a late penalty, but neither effort was enough to unsettle the Super Falcons.
Nigeria responded each time and maintained the attacking momentum required to secure qualification. Babajide’s contribution was central to the performance, with her two assists helping Nigeria establish the advantage they needed in the final Group C fixture.
The Super Falcons then added further gloss to the result in stoppage time. Rasheed Ajibade scored Nigeria’s fifth goal before Joy Omewa completed the scoring with the sixth, sealing a 6-2 win after 90 minutes of action.
The victory marked another success for Madugu’s side at the tournament and ensured that Nigeria advanced to the WAFCON quarter-finals in convincing fashion. Egypt’s elimination had already been confirmed before the encounter, but the result underlined the difference between the two teams as Nigeria turned their control of the match into a six-goal haul.
For Babajide, the Player of the Match award recognised an influential display in a decisive fixture. Her assists, combined with Nigeria’s attacking strength and late goals from Ajibade and Omewa, helped the Super Falcons complete their group-stage campaign with a statement win and move into the last eight of the competition.
