Rumour Mills: Chuba Akpom nearing loan move to Birmingham City

By Wale Mustapha

Nigerian-eligible striker Chuba Akpom is on the verge of completing a loan move to English Championship side Birmingham City ahead of the 2025/26 season.

According to The Athletic, the Blues are negotiating a deal with Ajax that includes an obligation to buy.

Akpom has reportedly agreed personal terms and is willing to take a pay cut to facilitate the transfer.

The 29-year-old forward, who joined Ajax from Middlesbrough in 2023, has been informed he is surplus to requirements at the Dutch club.

Akpom spent the second half of last season on loan at Ligue 1 side Lille, where he registered three goals and one assist in 16 appearances.

He rose to prominence during the 2022/23 campaign with Middlesbrough, finishing as the Sky Bet Championship’s top scorer with 28 goals in 40 matches and earning the league’s Player of the Season award.

A product of Arsenal’s youth academy, Akpom’s next chapter now looks set to unfold back in English football, this time in Birmingham colours.
