Seyi Olofinjana appointed to Chelsea’s Talent Management role covering Africa

By Wale Mustapha

Retired Nigerian midfielder, Seyi Olofinjana, has been appointed to a talent management role at Chelsea, where he will focus on recruitment and talent recommendations across Africa.

According to The Athletic, Olofinjana will collaborate with a newly-appointed scout dedicated to the African region.

The 44-year-old brings extensive experience to the role, as he is currently the executive director of Imperial FC, a club in Nigeria’s third division, where he has overseen the development of notable talents such as Taiwo Awoniyi.

Awoniyi joined Liverpool in 2015 and is currently playing for Nottingham Forest.

Olofinjana’s appointment aligns with Chelsea’s history of success with African players. Legends like Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, Michael Essien, and John Obi Mikel have made significant contributions to the club.

However, these players were typically acquired after establishing themselves in European football.

By establishing a dedicated operation in Africa, Chelsea aims to identify and nurture talent earlier in their careers, integrating them into the club’s long-term plans.

Olofinjana’s role will be pivotal in this new initiative, reflecting Chelsea’s commitment to fostering future football stars from the continent.
