Bursaspor’s steadfast defender, Shehu Abdullahi, expressed his deep honor upon securing a place in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, as reported by Completesportsnigeria.com (CSN).
Abdullahi played a pivotal role throughout the qualifiers, contributing significantly as the Super Eagles navigated past formidable opponents like Zambia, Cameroon, and Algeria to clinch their spot in the prestigious tournament. The 25-year-old right-back, unless unforeseen circumstances arise, is expected to secure his spot in the final 23-man squad for the competition.
Reflecting on his journey, Abdullahi took to Twitter to express his gratitude, stating, “The journey started in 2015 when I made my debut. Ever since then, your tremendous support has been amazing. I’m honored to be listed in the World Cup provisional squad. Thanks @thenff, Gernot Rohr & @NGSuperEagles backroom staff. Thanks Nigerian media!”
Abdullahi, having earned 12 caps for Nigeria, is yet to notch a goal on the international stage. However, his consistent performances have solidified his place in the national team setup.
Beyond his senior team contributions, Abdullahi’s footballing accolades include being a part of the home-based Super Eagles team that clinched third place at the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) held in South Africa. Moreover, he secured a bronze medal with Nigeria’s U-23 side at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, adding depth and experience to his already impressive resume.
As the anticipation builds for the World Cup, Abdullahi’s dedication and resilience on the field continue to earn him recognition, not just within the Nigerian football fraternity but on the international stage as well, solidifying his role as a key figure in Nigeria’s pursuit of success at the upcoming tournament.
