Shooting Stars appoint Salisu Yusuf as new technical adviser
Shooting Stars have appointed experienced coach Salisu Yusuf as their new technical adviser following the departure of Nurudeen Aweroro.
Yusuf replaces Aweroro, who recently left the Ibadan-based club after his spell in charge. Aweroro’s exit ended his time with the five-time Nigeria Premier Football League champions.
The 64-year-old brings more than two decades of coaching experience to Shooting Stars, also known as the Oluyole Warriors. He began his managerial career with Nasarawa United in 2002 and has since worked with several of Nigeria’s leading clubs.
His previous club appointments include Kano Pillars, Rangers International and Enyimba. Yusuf was most recently in charge of Coton Sport in Benin.
He has also held a number of roles within the Nigeria national-team set-up. Yusuf served as an assistant coach of the Super Eagles and has managed both the Super Eagles B team and Nigeria’s U-23 side.
One of the notable achievements of his career came in 2018, when he guided the home-based Super Eagles to the final of the African Nations Championship (CHAN). Nigeria were beaten by hosts Morocco in the final.
Yusuf’s appointment comes as Shooting Stars prepare for a return to continental competition. The club finished third in the NPFL last season and will represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup next term.
Their campaign will begin against Tunisian giants CS Sfaxien in the first preliminary round. The tie will provide Yusuf with an early test as he begins his work with the club.
Shooting Stars’ new technical adviser has therefore been appointed at a significant point in the club’s season, with domestic ambitions followed by the challenge of competing in Africa.
