Shooting Stars turn to Salisu Yusuf after Aweroro exit
Shooting Stars Sports Club have appointed experienced Nigerian coach Salisu Yusuf as their new Technical Adviser following the departure of Nurudeen Aweroro.
The Oluyole Warriors confirmed on Monday that Aweroro had left the club after one season in charge, during which he guided them to a CAF Confederation Cup qualification place.
Shooting Stars finished third in the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, securing continental football for the first time in 27 years.
Aweroro, who previously coached Ikorodu City, achieved the landmark after helping 3SC return to the CAF club competitions. The club has now moved quickly to appoint Yusuf, one of the most experienced coaches in Nigerian football.
Yusuf began his managerial career with Nasarawa United in 2002 and has since worked with several of the country’s leading clubs. His previous appointments include Kano Pillars, Rangers International and Enyimba.
He most recently managed Benin-based Coton Sport before taking up the role at Shooting Stars.
The new Technical Adviser also has considerable experience with Nigeria’s national teams. He has served as an assistant coach of the Super Eagles and has managed both the Super Eagles B and Nigeria’s Under-23 side.
One of the most significant achievements of Yusuf’s international career came in 2018, when he led the home-based Super Eagles to the final of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.
Shooting Stars said Yusuf’s extensive coaching experience, understanding of Nigerian football and record of developing local players were central to the decision to appoint him.
The club believes his arrival will provide experienced leadership and greater tactical direction as the Oluyole Warriors prepare for the demands of domestic and continental competition.
Yusuf’s appointment also gives Shooting Stars a coach with knowledge of both club and international football as they look to build on their third-place finish in the NPFL and make a strong return to African competition.
The Oluyole Warriors welcomed Yusuf to the club and wished him a successful tenure. His arrival is expected to bring additional technical depth to a team that has earned the opportunity to compete in Nigeria and across the continent.
The appointment follows a notable season for Shooting Stars, with Aweroro’s side ending the campaign in a position that secured the CAF Confederation Cup ticket. Their return to CAF club competition comes 27 years after the club last represented Nigeria at that level.
