Following the signing of Nigeria international Paul Onuachu on a transfer deadline day, Southampton head coach Nathan Jones has revealed the reason behind the move.
Onuachu joined the English Premier League strugglers, Southampton on a three-and-a-half year deal in their quest to retain their topflight status.
The 28-year-old striker arrives from the Jupiler Pro League leaders, Genk, becoming the fifth signing of the month for Nathan Jones’s squad, after the transfers of Mislav Oršić, Charly Alcaraz and James Bree, as well as fellow deadline-day arrival Kamaldeen Sulemana.
The Super Eagles forward has been in magnificent form this season after finding the back of the net 17 times in 22 appearances, making him the top scorer in the Belgian top-flight before his mid season move.
Onuachu who will be welcomed by his compatriot Joe Aribo, has been capped 13 times for Nigeria, scoring on three occasions and the manager feels the Nigerian is a good fit for his side in the relegation battle.
“Paul is a significant signing for us and completes what has been an extremely positive month in terms of recruitment,” Jones told media.
“He’s a handful to play against, has got a tremendous record throughout his career and he’s also someone who brings great experience with him, so he’ll be a positive addition to the squad,” he said.
