Southampton winger Sam Edozie wanted by Bundesliga newcomers Paderborn and FC Copenhagen
Paderborn and Danish champions FC Copenhagen have made enquiries about Southampton winger Sam Edozie as the 23-year-old considers his options before the August transfer window closes.
The newly promoted Bundesliga club and Copenhagen have contacted Southampton to establish the terms of a possible transfer. Several English Championship sides are also monitoring Edozie’s situation.
The winger remains under contract at St Mary’s until June 2027, but a move this summer is increasingly possible after a difficult 2025-26 campaign. Edozie made only two starts in all competitions and fell down the pecking order at Southampton.
Southampton are reshaping their squad after signing Lewis Dobbin earlier in the summer. The club are also prepared to reduce their wage bill by allowing fringe players to leave, which could increase the likelihood of Edozie departing.
Despite his restricted role last season, Edozie continues to be regarded as a player with considerable potential. He impressed during a loan spell with Belgian club Anderlecht in 2024-25, scoring four goals and supplying four assists.
That form has maintained interest from clubs who believe he can still develop into a top-level winger. A transfer could also give Edozie a route towards an international career with Nigeria.
Born in Lewisham, South London, Edozie is eligible to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian father. His full name is Samuel Ikechukwu Edozie.
He has represented England at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 level, including at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup, but has not played for the senior Three Lions. As a result, FIFA regulations mean he remains eligible to make a one-time switch of international allegiance to Nigeria.
The Nigeria Football Federation has identified Edozie as one of its leading diaspora targets. His pace, direct running and ability to beat opponents in one-on-one situations are viewed as key strengths.
Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola previously praised Edozie’s attacking qualities, describing him as a player with “special quality” because of the way he drives into the penalty area.
Regular first-team football is now considered the most important factor in Edozie’s bid to earn a senior Nigeria call-up. Paderborn could offer him the opportunity to establish himself in Germany’s top flight following their promotion, while Copenhagen would provide the prospect of European football in the UEFA Conference League.
The club that wins the race for Edozie could therefore help revive his Southampton career while also bringing him closer to making his international debut for Nigeria.
