Stanley Eguma responds after Rivers United humiliation at Diables Noirs in Brazzaville

By Saheed Afolabi
Rivers United gaffer, Stanley Eguma has explained the reasons that led to the unfortunate 3-0 loss to Congolese side, Diables Noirs in their opening match in the CAF Confederation Cup in Brazzaville.
Strikes from Carla Wunda, Jaures Ngombe and Domi Massoumou from the spot inside seven minutes condemned the Nigeria Premier Football League champions to a heavy defeat at Alphonse Massamba-Debat Stadium.
Reflecting on the disappointing loss, the decade-long serving manager has blamed loss of concentration and tactical indiscipline from the players for the defeat at Diables Noirs.
“We never expected this result because we prepared for a better result but unfortunately, we got beaten 3-0,” Eguma told media.
“I’m not surprised because I knew they are a good side the scoreline did not reflect the standard of the game. You could see that in the first 30 minutes, the games were balanced and we got two corner kicks which shows that we are attacking when we conceded the first goal my players lost concentration as a result of tactical indiscipline.
“We came out in the second half for goals, we got a lot of chances including a penalty but we lost them. This is not the end, we’ve had games to play, and we have to go back and prepare for Asec Mimosa.”
Rivers United will face Asec Mimosa in their next CAFCC on the 19th of February 2023 by 5pm at the Godswill Akpabio stadium, Uyo. The Pride of Rivers will then travel to face Motema Pembe on the 26th of February 2023.
