Sunday Oliseh tips Victor Boniface to lift AFCON after historic Bundesliga glory

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Nigeria captain and coach, Sunday Oliseh has heaped praise on victorious Victor Boniface for making history with his club Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen won their first-ever Bundesliga championship after they dismantled Werder Bremen 5-0 with Boniface scoring the opening goal and also making an assist to dethrone perennial champions Bayern Munich with five matches remaining in the season.

The team have also been unbeaten in 29 league games, winning 25 and drawing four while scoring 74 goals and conceding only 19 – for the second-best attack and best defence in the division.

Meanwhile, the former Union Saint-Gilloise star has enjoyed a remarkable debut season with the Werkself, netting 11 goals and providing nine assists in just 18 Bundesliga appearances.

Although he has yet to represent Nigeria’s senior team at a major tournament due to injury, Oliseh believes he is the missing piece to solving Super Eagles AFCON title misery.

“Victor Boniface was once again extraordinary as Leverkusen grabbed its first-ever Bundesliga title with 5 games left to play,” Oliseh wrote on his X page.

“Boniface is strong, skilful, intelligent, mobile, calm under pressure and I am convinced he will lead Nigeria to AFCON glory & more soon,” he added.

Boniface and Tella became the first Nigerians since Sunday Oliseh in 2002 to win the Bundesliga title.
