Super Falcons Coach Justine Madugu outlines next steps after WAFCON triumph

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team head coach Justine Madugu says Nigeria will waste no time in shifting focus to the qualifiers for the next edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to begin in October.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s recent success, Madugu admitted the team’s achievements had drawn significant attention but emphasized the importance of preparation for what lies ahead.

“We have achieved what we have achieved. It has brought so much attention to the team,” he said.

“The qualifiers for the next edition are coming. We have a game in October which we have to start planning for.”

Madugu noted that the short preparation window for the just-concluded WAFCON limited the chance to assess more players. He believes the team must now use the coming months to expand opportunities.

“We must try as much as possible to check more players and have more camps. We didn’t have much time preparing for the WAFCON. The time was too short and risky to test new players. Now that this one is done and dusted, we hope between now and October we can have one or two camps to give some players the opportunity to showcase what they can do.”

The coach confirmed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and technical crew already have a program mapped out leading into the qualifiers and beyond.
