Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, Madugu and Captain Ajibade Speak on Preparedness, Mentality, and Mission X.
As anticipation builds for Saturday’s blockbuster WAFCON 2024 final between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and hosts Morocco, Head Coach Madugu and team captain Ajibade have reaffirmed the team’s focus, mental strength, and determination to bring home Nigeria’s record-extending 10th continental title.
Speaking to the media during the team’s pre-match engagement, Coach Madugu acknowledged the challenges of short recovery time between fixtures but assured fans that the team has remained committed to optimal preparation.
“As usual, we’ve been preparing well. The turnaround time between matches is short, but we’re making the most of it. We’re focused on being fully ready,” said Madugu.
On the pressures of playing in a final, Madugu noted:
“Finals come with their own pressures. You work so hard to get to this point, and just need that extra effort to realise the dream. We’re preparing in all aspects — mentally, psychologically, and tactically — for every possible scenario.”
Captain Ajibade, echoing his sentiments, added:
“We are focused and determined. For me, there’s no pressure. It’s okay to feel it, but how you manage it matters. We’re mentally prepared for whatever happens. We just want a fair, beautiful game.”
Madugu emphasized the strength of the host nation and the respect Nigeria holds for them:
“We know what Morocco brings to the table, especially at home. They’re a top side and won’t want a repeat of 2022. But we’ve studied them and have our strategy. We believe in our players and what we’re doing.”
On Nigeria’s historic record of never losing a WAFCON final, the coach was cautiously optimistic:
“I pray that the omen continues. Every final is different, and we’re ready for all outcomes — even penalties.”
Madugu also addressed injury concerns in the squad:
“Francesca Ordega picked up a knock and didn’t train yesterday. The medical team is working on her recovery. If she doesn’t make it, we’ll push on, but her spirit will remain with the team.”
On team selection and tactical flexibility, he said:
“We evaluate each opposition and choose based on our game plan. Everyone has a role, even those who may not play. It’s not a one-man show. Coaches, players, medical staff — everyone contributes.”
Ajibade reiterated the significance of the final for the players and for Nigeria:
“We’ve worked hard and sacrificed a lot. This is everything for us — a big responsibility. We know what it means for us and for the nation.”
Reflecting on the broader journey, Madugu admitted the road has not been smooth:
“It’s been challenging in many ways — logistics, support, planning — but we’ve managed it and never let it affect the team’s spirit or focus.”
He concluded by paying tribute to the fans and reinforcing the team’s commitment to Mission X:
“We can’t thank our fans enough. Their support on all platforms has been incredible. We’re determined to make them proud and bring the trophy home. Mission X is our drive — and we’re all committed to making it a reality.”
