Super Falcons set sights on early advantage against Benin Amazons in Lomé

By Dayo Awoniyi

Ten-time African champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, will aim to assert their dominance when they face the Amazons of Benin Republic on Friday in the first leg of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final qualifying round at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé.

Head coach Justine Madugu has charged his 19-player squad to deliver a commanding performance that could make next week’s return leg in Nigeria a formality.

The Falcons — reigning continental champions following their triumph in Morocco earlier this year — are determined to secure another qualification ticket as they prepare to defend their title, with Morocco also set to host the 2026 WAFCON.

“We have a team that will go out there and make us proud,” Madugu said ahead of the clash.

“Yes, we would have loved to have Jennifer Echegini, but we’ll focus on those available and go for the goals that will put us in good stead for the return leg.”

With Echegini sidelined, Deborah Abiodun is expected to start in midfield alongside captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Christy Ucheibe, while Chiamaka Nnadozie anchors the defence behind Michelle Alozie, Tosin Demehin, Osinachi Ohale, and Ashley Plumptre.

In attack, Asisat Oshoala, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Esther Okoronkwo, Joy Omewa, and Folashade Ijamilusi will spearhead Nigeria’s push for a crucial away win.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 3:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. Nigeria time), with Gambian referee Ngum Fatou appointed to officiate proceedings.

A strong result in Lomé would put the Super Falcons in a commanding position as they seek to maintain their continental dominance and secure early qualification for next year’s championship.
