Taiwo Awoniyi revealed that he has maintained a close relationship with Kelechi Iheanacho since the cadet level.
Nottingham Forest will be hoping the close relationship between their forward Awoniyi and Iheanacho will be helpful in the race to sign the Leicester City man.
According to TalkForestTV, preliminary talks on Iheanacho’s move to the City Ground is ongoing, with the two strikers have been together since the U17 level, having helped Nigeria win the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup title.
Iheanacho was the best player, while Awoniyi scored four goals in the tournament and that connection has continued with the Super Eagles as they share the same room in camp, with Iheanacho nicking 42 caps while Awoniyi has four.
However, with the Foxes playing in the Championship next season, Iheanacho looks certain to leave Leicester City this summer and Awoniyi’s connection will help to convince his compatriot to commit to Steve Copper’s side.
“From my youth days, Kelechi [Iheanacho] has been my best friend,” Awoniyi told Soccernet.
“He was my roommate at the U17 level, and I always see him as my best friend when we were on national duty because of the past relationship that we have.”
