Taiwo Awoniyi’s Brilliance Not Enough as Mouscron Suffers Defeat Against Standard Liege

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi, currently on loan at Mouscron from Liverpool, displayed remarkable prowess by scoring a brace and providing an assist, but his efforts were in vain as Mouscron succumbed to a 4-3 defeat away to Standard Liege in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League on Sunday.

Awoniyi’s impactful performance included leveling the score on the 19th minute after Christian Luyindama’s early opener for Standard Liege. Despite Sebastien Pocognoli and Dorin Rotariu exchanging goals, Luyindama’s red card in the 78th minute created an opportunity for Mouscron to take the lead once again, with Awoniyi seizing the moment to secure his second goal of the game. However, Standard Liege, resilient even with 10 men, mounted a late comeback, securing victory with goals from Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez and Duje Cop.

The enthralling encounter witnessed late drama as Mouscron’s Omar Govea received a red card in the 90th minute. Awoniyi’s impressive tally now stands at six goals in 24 league appearances for Mouscron this season.

In other football developments, Manchester City on-loan midfielder Chidiebere Nwakali played no part as Aberdeen triumphed 4-2 against Dundee United in the Scottish Cup, securing a spot in the quarter-finals.

In Switzerland’s top flight, former MFM FC striker Stephen Odey spent the entire match on the bench for FC Zurich in their 2-1 victory over St. Gallen. This win marked a return to form for FC Zurich, following last weekend’s 4-2 home loss to Thun, with Odey previously contributing a goal in the team’s scoring efforts.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands Eredivisie, Super Eagles defender Tyrone Ebuehi featured for the entire duration in ADO Den Haag’s goalless draw against Groningen. The draw signifies ADO Den Haag’s third in their last five league games, maintaining a mixed record of one win and one loss in the recent stretch.
