Tijani Babangida: Former Super Eagles winger tips Flying Eagles for World Cup ticket
By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
After its 2-0 win over Mozambique which sealed its place in the quarter-final of the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Egypt, former Nigeria winger, Tijani Babangida has expressed his delight with the Flying Eagles’ resurgent.
Goals of forwards Samson Lawal and Ibrahim Muhammad gave Nigeria all three points and a deserved quarter-final ticket at the 23rd Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt on Saturday.
Victory took the Flying Eagles to six points, and with Senegal pounding host nation Egypt 4-0 in Cairo, to finish top with a maximum of nine points from three matches, Nigeria finished a comfortable second.
Ladan Bosso’s side guaranteed a place in the quarterfinals with the triumph and the Atlanta Olympic gold medalist believes the Flying Eagles are back to their best after the shocking loss to Senegal.
“I am delighted with the performance of the Flying Eagles against Mozambique as they have shown their determination to make the country proud,” Babangida told completesports.com
“They are back to their best and their focus should be on how to pick the World Cup ticket after qualifying to the knockout stages.”
The most successful team at the U-20 AFCON will play the winner of Group B (currently being contested by Congo and Uganda) in the quarter-finals on Thursday at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia.
A win in the quarter final will seal a place for Nigeria at 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia with a chance to attempt its first World title at U-20 level.
