Tosin Demehin Looks Forward to Glorious WAFCON Debut in Morocco

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

After rising through the ranks with Nigeria’s U-20 team and becoming a key figure in the Super Falcons squad, Galatasaray defender Oluwatosin Demehin is setting her sights on lifting the trophy at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Originally scheduled for 2023, this year’s WAFCON marks Demehin’s debut appearance in the competition. She arrives in Morocco fresh from competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and is eager to make her mark.

“It’s a dream come true for me, and I feel great and honoured to be here,” Demehin told Super Falcons Media.
“It’s a privilege I’m not taking for granted.”

Nigeria, the most successful team in WAFCON history with nine titles, endured a disappointing campaign in Morocco in 2022, finishing fourth. As the team returns to familiar ground, Demehin is determined to help reclaim lost glory.

“Being my first time, my expectation is for us to redeem our lost glory,” she said. “We want to become champions again and take the trophy back to Nigeria for the 10th time.”

Off the pitch, the 22-year-old defender shared a glimpse of her personality and what she misses most about home.

“Right now, I miss Nigerian food—vegetable soup and semovita are my favourites,” she smiled.
“Most people think I’m not jovial because of my facial expressions, but I actually am.”

WAFCON 2024 will be Demehin’s fourth major tournament appearance for Nigeria, following her outings at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the Paris 2024 Olympics.
