Troost-Ekong promises future Super Eagles earnings to charity in Akwa Ibom

William Troost-Ekong has made a remarkable decision to forego future earnings from playing for the national team, instead directing his bonuses towards developing football in his home state of Akwa Ibom.

The 2023 AFCON Player of the Tournament has opted to decline payment for any further services on the pitch for his nation, choosing instead to channel his bonuses towards supporting children in Akwa Ibom State.

This generous gesture by the 30-year-old PAOK Thessaloniki centre-back, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, was revealed on Brila FM on Monday.

Born in The Netherlands to a Dutch mother and a Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong has always maintained a strong connection with his Ibibio roots, and his decision to give back to the community that nurtured his father was inevitable.

During a reception at the Government House in Uyo, the player presented an Eagles jersey to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, following his outstanding performance at AFCON.

Troost-Ekong is set to host a charity match at the Godswill Akpabion Stadium on Saturday, June 2, 2024, marking the launch of the Troost Ekong Foundation.

“William Troost-Ekong (M.O.N) has decided to give up all his future Super Eagles allowances and match bonuses, donating them towards helping kids in Akwa Ibom achieve their football dreams,” as quoted by Brila.

In a statement released via his agency, The BFA Agency, Troost-Ekong expressed optimism about his rehabilitation process.

“Everything is going well,” Troost-Ekong stated. “I’m actually slightly ahead of schedule in my rehab. I’m off the crutches, I’m working out in the gym and pool, and very eager to get back on the pitch and start building my fitness back up.”
