Nigerian defender Tyronne Ebuehi revealed that he declined an opportunity to join Portuguese giants Benfica in January, prioritizing his ambition to represent Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Ebuehi, whose contract with Dutch club ADO Den Haag expires in the summer, opted to enhance his chances of featuring in the global football showpiece by maintaining regular game time.
Speaking in an interview with m.update.nl, Ebuehi emphasized the importance of consistent playing minutes in his decision-making process. He stated, “For me, the most important thing is to keep making minutes. Going to such a club means a new adventure and you do not know whether you’re going to make minutes.”
The defender highlighted the trust and support he receives from ADO Den Haag, acknowledging that continuous playtime at the club could significantly boost his chances of being part of Nigeria’s squad for the World Cup. Expressing his aspirations, Ebuehi spoke optimistically about the pinnacle event in football, stating, “In terms of football, the World Cup is the biggest stage in the world. If I’m selected, it will be a dream come true, maybe the biggest one.”
