U17 AFCON: Golden Eaglets shift final camp to North Africa after Germany visa hitches

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Tuesday announced a 10-day final camp in a yet-to-be announced North Africa country following the failed attempts to secure entry visas to Germany for the U17 national team.

The Golden Eaglets were earlier scheduled to depart for a training tour of Germany but they will now have to head to a North Africa where they will finalize their for the 2023 Africa U17 Cup of Nations.

The Eaglets will face Morocco, South Africa, and Zambia at the U17 Afcon in Algeria between 29 April and 19 May and the NFF leadership tasked Nduka Ugbade’s side to work towards qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Cup.

“After appraising the preparations that have been afforded the team pre-competition, including a proposed 10-day final camping programme in North Africa, the Board minced no words in charging the U17 Boys’ National Team (Golden Eaglets) to deploy its best efforts in overcoming all before it to win the Africa U17 Cup of Nations taking place in Algeria between 29 April and 19 May, and in the process earning a ticket to the FIFA u17 World Cup finals taking place later this year,” the NFF statement read.

Golden Eaglets is the most successful team in international football for their age group winning a record, five FIFA U17 World Cup titles, and being runners-up on three occasions.

They are also two-time Africa U17 Cup of Nations champions with their most recent title at the 2007 edition.

The 2023 U17 AFCON will be the 15th edition of the tournament and the top four teams of the youth competition will qualify for the 2023 FIFA U17 World Cup as the CAF representatives.
