U20 AFCON: Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi sets sights on Morocco clash

By Wale Mustapha

Nigeria captain Daniel Bameyi says the team has shifted focus to their next match against Morocco following their 1–0 victory over Tunisia in their opening Group B fixture at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cairo.

Nigeria, seven-time champions of the competition, began their campaign on a positive note on Thursday, thanks to a 38th-minute goal from midfielder Auwal Ibrahim.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Bameyi, who plays for Bayelsa United, expressed the squad’s determination to build on the win and secure qualification for both the tournament’s knockout stages and the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

“It is on to the next game. We hope to win and go top of our group,” Bameyi said. “We started the tournament very well and we want to qualify for the World Cup and win the tournament.”

The Flying Eagles will face Morocco on Sunday in a highly anticipated Group B clash at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo. Morocco currently leads the group after edging Kenya 3–2 in their opening match.
