U20 AFCON: The Gambia semi-final duel will be different – Nigeria’s Daniel Bameyi
By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria U20 skipper, Daniel Bameyi has assured Nigerians of victory against the Gambia in the semi-final encounter of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt on Monday.
The Flying Eagles will square up against the Gambians in bid for a final spot at the Cairo International Stadium but will face a mountainous task against the Central Africans who are yet to concede a goal in the tournament.
And upbeat Bameyi insists winning the U20 AFCON remains the target of his side team, while vowing they will implement the coaches’ strategies against the young Scorpions.
“The trophy is next on the pipeline because I want to come back home with pride,” Bameyi told media.
“When we came, we target the World Cup ticket and that is done we are targeting the final and there is no way we will get to the final without a semi-final. This game is not going to be different and the coaches have done perfectly well giving us some strategies which we are going to use tomorrow [Monday].
“Nigerians should just sit back and enjoy the game. The Gambians have played four matches and no goal conceded yet and scored nine but when you get to the semi-final it’s a different game as a whole.
“They are a very good team because you must respect your opponent because anything can happen and we are also good as well, tomorrow [Monday] will be a different game.”
The Nigeria U20 side have been runners up of the U20 AFCON on two occasions in 1999 and 2007 and they have emerged champions seven times in 1980, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2005, 2011 and 2015.
