Victor Boniface sparks reactions with retirement prank on social media

By Dayo Awoniyi

Nigerian international and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface stirred up confusion and amusement on Friday after jokingly announcing his retirement from international football via social media.

The 24-year-old forward posted the message shortly after Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Russia in a friendly match played in Moscow.

Boniface, who started the game, was substituted in the 61st minute for Tolu Arokodare—who went on to score the Super Eagles’ equalizer.

In the now-deleted Instagram story, Boniface wrote: “Proud to play for my country and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment, the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I don hang boot.”

The post briefly sparked speculation about his international future, but Boniface quickly retracted the statement, confirming it was a lighthearted joke. Fans flooded his social media with a mix of relieved and amused reactions.

Known for his playful online presence, Boniface has previously shared humorous posts poking fun at the challenges of professional football.

In one instance, he posted a photo captioned, “When you finally understand the tactics,” and in another: “When you win but still get criticized.” Both posts drew engagement from fans who appreciate his relatable and humorous tone.

While the retirement prank caused a momentary stir, it ultimately reinforced Boniface’s reputation as one of the more engaging and light-hearted figures in Nigerian football.

Boniface remains an important part of Nigeria’s squad as they prepare for upcoming international fixtures, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
