Victor Moses Attributes Chelsea Transformation to Cezar Azpilicueta
In a recent interview, Nigeria wing-back Victor Moses has credited his teammate Cezar Azpilicueta for playing the most significant role in transforming his Chelsea career. Since joining the club from Wigan in 2012, Moses struggled to secure regular playing time, enduring loan spells at Liverpool, Stoke City, and West Ham United. However, his fortunes changed dramatically with the arrival of Antonio Conte as manager.
Speaking to Goal, Moses revealed, “I’d say Azpilicueta has influenced me the most. He played a huge part in my defensive development last season. He is always behind me, constantly talking to me to ensure I am in the right position, knowing when to attack and when to defend.”
The 26-year-old further praised Azpilicueta, highlighting his underrated skills as a defender. “He understands me. We established a partnership which was very good. Cesar is underrated. As a defender, he has everything. He’s quick, passionate, and has an insatiable desire for the game. Azpilicueta is never tired; he can run all night in every minute. He wants to play every game.”
Moses emphasized the positive influence Azpilicueta has on the entire team, stating, “He’s someone that loves the game. He is always talking to every player before games, motivating them and urging us to go out there and win.”
The Chelsea wing-back’s transformation under Conte’s management has been remarkable. Thriving in a new wing-back role, Moses has become an integral part of the team’s success. His performances have earned him nominations for the prestigious Aiteo CAF and BBC African Footballer of the Year Awards.
