Victor Osimhen deserves to win 2023 African Footballer of the Year – Waidi Akanni

Former Nigeria international, Waidi Akanni has thrown his weight behind Victor Osimhen for the 2023 Africa Footballer of the Year award.

Osimhen took the world by storm by leading Napoli to win the Scudetto title and contributing 26 goals in the process which also earned him the highest goal scorer award in Serie A.

The former Lagos FA chairman said Osimhen had made Africa proud with his astonishing performances in Europe by making history with the Partenopei and therefore deserves the best player in Africa crown.

“You talk about a standout player that made Africa proud in Europe, then the first name that comes to your mind is Victor Osimhen considering his exploits for Napoli and how he guided the team to win the Serie A title,” Akanni told Complete Sports.

“He’s sure bet to win it because his goals for both club and country is something that makes him the first choice on the list. For me, I think Osimhen has done enough to win the award and should not be denied.”

Only Rashidi Yekini, Kanu Nwankwo, Victor Ikpeba and Emmanuel Amuneke have won the prestigious CAF Africa Footballer of the year award.

While Kanu won the individual award last in 1999 to get the nickname Golden Boy of Nigeria Football.
