Former Nigeria coach, Emmanuel Amuneke believes Victor Osimhen has what it takes to win the Africa Footballer of The Year.
The former Barcelona star pipped George Weah and Rashidi Yekini to win the prestigious African Footballer of The Year award in 1994 and no Nigerian has won the coveted accolade till date
Despite the hiatus, the 52-year-old believes Osimhen possesses the right attributes to win the award in the coming years following his terrific form for Napoli this season.
“Of course, I’ve been looking at what Osimhen is doing with Napoli in Italy and I think he stands the chance of winning the African footballer of the Year,” Amuneke said.
“He has been so exceptional this season and I think he’s getting close to becoming the African footballer of the year, maybe not this year but in the nearest future.“
Only four Nigerians have won the African Footballer of The Year which are, Rashidi Yekini (1993), Emmanuel Amuneke (1994), Victor Ikpeba (1997) and Arsenal legend, Kanu Nwankwo (1996 and 1997).
Osimhen has been in a mind blowing form lately netting 18 goals in 19 appearances for Napoli in the Serie A taking the club to the top of the table. Since making his big money move to Italy, Osimhen has been one of the fans favorite at the 54,726 capacity Diego Armando Maradona stadium in Naples.
