Victor Osimhen Reveals How Mario Gomez Transformed His Difficult Early Days at Wolfsburg

Nigeria star Victor Osimhen has opened up on the pivotal moment that changed the trajectory of his early career in Europe, recalling how the arrival of German football legend Mario Gomez altered his mindset during a tough spell at Wolfsburg.

Osimhen, who is now regarded as one of the most dangerous strikers in world football, admitted that his Bundesliga stint did not start as he had hoped. The Nigerian forward struggled for form and confidence after joining Wolfsburg as a teenager.

“My time at Wolfsburg didn’t go as I expected at first,” Osimhen said in an interview on Smallie YouTube.

Everything changed the moment Mario Gomez walked into the dressing room.

“Then Mario Gomez arrived. He was a huge legend — an experienced striker, one of the most lethal forwards you can think of in world football,” Osimhen recalled.

Instead of asking for a move away, the young striker made a bold decision. He went straight to the club director’s office with a message rooted in ambition and humility.

“I said: ‘I want to stay because I want to learn.’ I knew I still had time, so I wanted to learn,” he said.

What followed became a defining chapter in Osimhen’s development.

He described training sessions with Gomez as a daily masterclass in elite striking.

“I was watching this man — some of his incredible goals, his touches on the ball, how he read the game, the offside traps, everything… I was stunned,” Osimhen said. “Training with Mario Gomez was truly amazing.”

From a struggling teenager in Germany to a global superstar, Osimhen’s rise has been shaped by several key influences. But learning under one of the Bundesliga’s most prolific strikers may well have been the spark that ignited the journey to where he is today.
