WAFCON 2026: Super Falcons Suffer Quarter-Final Defeat to Cameroon, Miss Automatic 2027 World Cup Qualification
Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), ending their hopes of securing automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
It was a fiercely contested and physical encounter, with a moment of individual brilliance ultimately deciding the tie.
Cameroon’s 19-year-old forward Myriam Nyadjou produced a stunning free-kick in the 19th minute to give the Indomitable Lionesses the lead. The strike proved to be the difference as Cameroon held on for a memorable victory.
The Super Falcons created several opportunities throughout the match, with Rasheedat Ajibade, Gift Monday, Jennifer Echegini and Esther Okoronkwo all coming close to finding the equaliser.
However, Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina produced an outstanding performance, making crucial saves to deny Nigeria and preserve her side’s advantage.
Nigeria showed plenty of attacking intent and created enough chances to get back into the game, but struggled to find a way past the impressive Cameroonian goalkeeper. The physical approach of the Indomitable Lionesses also made it difficult for the Falcons to establish control for long periods.
Late introductions, including Esther Okoronkwo and Asisat Oshoala, failed to change the outcome as Cameroon successfully defended their lead until the final whistle.
The defeat marks the first time the Super Falcons have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the WAFCON. Nigeria have also conceded six goals in the tournament, their highest tally at a single edition of the competition.
With automatic qualification now out of reach, the Super Falcons must regroup quickly. They will face South Africa in a crucial playoff match, with a place in the Intercontinental Playoffs for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at stake.
