WAFU-B WCLQ: Hasaacas Ladies coach laments early capitulation to Edo Queens

Coach of Ghanaian champions, Emmanuel Mensah, says his team gave up early during the match after a 3-0 loss to Edo Queens in their second group game of the 2024 West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League Qualifiers.

Both sides rekindled their rivalry in the tournament on Wednesday playing out a 0-0 draw in the first half.

Second-half goals from Emem Essien (brace) and Abideem Suliat sealed a 3-0 win for Moses Aduku’s side with passage to the semi-final for the Nigerian side, to the displeasure of Mensah.

“Football is very chaotic. If you’re conceding and you don’t keep your head up, you keep on conceding. And I think the girls gave up too early,” Mensah said.

“They should have still fought till the end, but they gave up too early. The other thing, yes, it’s not the best.

“Two games without being able to score shows that, attacking-wise, we have not been at our best. It’s unfortunate because that is not Hasaacas’ standard.

“We need to work on that and in our next game, try to score goals.”

The encounter was the fifth between Nigerian and Ghanaian teams at the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League Qualifiers.

Rivers Angels beat Hasaacas Ladies in the group stage of the 2021 edition before the Ghanaian side emerged 3-1 winners in the final match.

Bayelsa Queens defeated Ampem Darkoa 3-0 in the 2022 finals before Delta Queens succumbed 1-0 to Ampem Darkoa in the 2023 final.
