WAFU-B Women’s Champions League: Delta Queens dominate individual awards despite title loss

Despite losing the final of the 2023 West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League final 1-0 to Ampem Darkoa, Delta Queens won two of three individuals at the end of the tournament.
A goal from Ophelia Amponsah in the first half sealed the win for the Ghanaian champions and qualified the team for the third edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Chinaza Agoh of Delta Queens won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at the end of the WAFU-B competition after winning the same award at the end of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership.
Delta Queens goalkeeper, Mgbechi Anderline clinched the best goalkeeper award. She also won the same award in the league last season and at the inaugural WAFU-B U20 Women’s Cup, making it back-to-back-to-back awards at the league and WAFU-B levels in the space of six months.
The only award claimed by Ampem Darkoa at the end of the tournament was the highest goal scorer prize which went to Mary Amponsah. Amponsah scored eight goals in four games to emerge as the top goal scorer.
The major championship diadem went to the Ghanaian champions and they will represent WAFU-B at the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League.
For the first time, the Nigeria team won’t be participating in the CAF Women’s Champions League after Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens participated in the last two editions.
