“We Need Him Now” – Kelvin Wilson emphasizes Taiwo Awoniyi’s Importance
Former Nottingham Forest defender Kelvin Wilson has highlighted the significance of Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi to the team and stressed the urgency for him to rediscover his scoring form promptly.
Awoniyi’s impact on Tricky Trees’ Premier League campaign has been limited by injuries, causing him to miss 12 games this season, significantly affecting the team’s performance.
With only six Premier League goals in 16 appearances, Awoniyi’s playing time has been carefully managed by manager Nuno Esprito Santos to ensure his fitness for crucial matches.
Wilson expressed his frustration with Awoniyi’s sporadic game time, emphasizing Nottingham Forest’s desperate need for him to perform at his best.
“Have we got time to be patient? Time is running out but we need him to start firing now,” Wilson told Nottimgham Forest News in an interview.
“I know he’s been injured but the pressure is on and we need him to perform. Ideally, we’d be mid-table and we could keep bringing him on for the last 20 minutes to get his fitness up.
“We don’t have the luxury to give him time, we need him to be scoring goals.”
With Nottingham Forest currently sitting just three points outside the relegation zone, Santos’ team is in dire need of Awoniyi’s contributions to secure their Premier League status, reminiscent of his pivotal role last season when he helped them avoid relegation with six goals and one assist in the final four games.
