“We’re very disappointed” — Iwobi reflects on Fulham’s late defeat to Newcastle

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed his disappointment after the club’s late 2–1 defeat to Newcastle United in their Premier League clash at St James’ Park on Saturday.

The Cottagers appeared on course to secure a valuable point before Bruno Guimarães struck in the 90th minute to hand the hosts all three points and condemn Fulham to a second consecutive league loss.

“Of course, we’re very disappointed,” Iwobi said after the match. “We knew it was going to be a hard game and a tough place to come to, but if we don’t win, then we shouldn’t lose — maintain the draw.

“Unfortunately, a last-minute winner is a dagger in the heart, but we have to pick ourselves up and go into next week’s game.”

Iwobi praised his team’s response in the second half but lamented missed opportunities that proved costly.

“Going into the second half, we had the bigger spark. There was a lot more dynamism down the flanks, and we were able to create chances against a great Newcastle side,” he explained. “We limited their chances, but a couple of mistakes punished us.

“As long as we stay consistent, give 100 per cent, and stay focused until the 90-plus minutes, I’m sure we can get the results we need.”

Despite the loss, Fulham’s spirited display offered positives for manager Marco Silva’s side as they look to bounce back in their next Premier League outing.
