World Cup Playoffs: John Obi Mikel shares winning tips for Nigeria ahead of Gabon clash

By Wale Mustapha

Former captain of Nigeria, John Obi Mikel, has outlined three crucial factors he believes will help the team secure victory against Gabon in Thursday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff semifinal in Rabat, Morocco.

Mikel, who captained the Super Eagles for over a decade, emphasized the importance of confidence, bravery, and passion for Eric Chelle’s side as they take on the Panthers with a place in the World Cup final playoff at stake.

The three-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions must defeat Gabon to progress to a potential final against either Cameroon or DR Congo, making Thursday’s match a pivotal encounter.

Speaking on the Obi One Podcast Channel, Mikel advised the current Super Eagles to approach the match with a sense of pride, knowing the significance of wearing Nigeria’s green and white colors.

“Go into the game, play as we should, with full confidence, bravery, and passion, knowing you’re wearing the green and white. The badge of that green and white is huge,” Mikel said.

“300 million people are watching—that’s a lot of pressure, but you have to deal with it. I know they can do it, and I believe in them.”

Mikel’s words come at a time when the Super Eagles are under intense scrutiny due to ongoing disputes over unpaid bonuses with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Despite these off-field challenges, including limited training sessions ahead of the game, Mikel urged the players to focus on delivering a strong performance and to prove that internal issues won’t derail their World Cup aspirations.
