World Cup Qualifiers: Omeruo hails Super Eagles’ effort despite Zimbabwe draw

By Wale Mustapha
Nigeria’s vice-captain, Kenneth Omeruo, has praised the Super Eagles for their performance despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe in Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria the lead in the 74th minute, but Zimbabwe’s Chawanda Chirewa scored a late equalizer, securing a share of the spoils for the Warriors in the Matchday Six encounter.
While disappointed by the late goal, Omeruo remained optimistic about the Super Eagles’ World Cup qualification prospects.
He expressed his belief that the team is close to securing a spot in the 2026 tournament, saying on his X (formerly Twitter) handle: “Well done boys… we are almost there… unlucky with the late goal.. #Believe.”
With seven points from six games, Nigeria remains in fourth place in Group C.
The Super Eagles will next face Rwanda in September when the qualifiers resume, with hopes of improving their standing and securing a ticket to the World Cup.
