Wydad Casablanca Welcomes Benito Floro as New Head Coach

Nigerian forward Chisom Chikatara is set to experience a shift in leadership dynamics at his Moroccan club, Wydad Casablanca, with the appointment of Spanish tactician Benito Floro as the team’s new head coach. The recent decision follows the dismissal of Hussein Amotta on Wednesday, paving the way for Floro’s return for a second stint with the reigning African champions.

Floro, 65, previously managed Wydad Casablanca in 2013, a tenure that concluded after a defeat against Djoliba of Mali in the CAF Confederation Cup. The seasoned coach, with an extensive football background, including coaching stints in various countries, brings a wealth of experience to the club.

His recent role was with Costa Rican top league side Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, where he spent the past year before accepting the Wydad Casablanca assignment.

The decision to part ways with Amotta and his entire backroom staff was prompted by a series of unsatisfactory domestic performances. Wydad Casablanca, the reigning champions, faced setbacks, losing six times in their last fourteen outings. The team currently holds the 12th position in the 16-team standings, trailing the leaders, Hassania Agadir, by 13 points.

Chikatara, who joined Wydad Casablanca in 2016 from Nigeria Professional Football League club Abia Warriors, has encountered challenges in securing a significant role within the team. With Floro’s arrival, there is optimism that the Nigerian forward might enjoy increased playing time and an opportunity to showcase his skills on the pitch. The strategic change in coaching staff aims to revitalize the team’s performance and regain its competitive edge in both domestic and continental competitions.
