Yakubu Aiyegbeni Announces Retirement from Football on 35th Birthday

Former Super Eagles striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, has officially declared his retirement from professional football on his 35th birthday, marking the end of an illustrious career that spanned across various clubs and international tournaments.

Aiyegbeni’s football journey took him through prominent English clubs such as Everton, Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City (on loan), Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Reading, and Coventry City. His versatility and goal-scoring prowess left an indelible mark on the English football scene. Additionally, he showcased his skills on the international stage, representing Nigeria in multiple Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup tournaments.

Making his full Super Eagles debut on April 22, 2000, in a 4-0 victory against Eritrea, Aiyegbeni became a key figure in Nigerian football. His participation in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, where the U-23 Eagles reached the quarter-finals, further solidified his standing in the national team.

Despite a remarkable career, Aiyegbeni faced challenges, including being sent home from the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations due to indiscipline. His last major tournament for Nigeria was the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where he scored a goal in a memorable 2-2 draw against South Korea.

With 21 goals in 57 appearances, Aiyegbeni holds the distinction of being the third-highest international goalscorer for Nigeria. As he bids farewell to the football pitch, fans and colleagues alike celebrate the legacy of a player whose contributions have left an enduring impact on Nigerian football.
