Yan Diomande’s Ivory Coast display increases pressure on Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid

Yan Diomande has intensified the competition for Real Madrid’s left-wing position after producing an impressive performance for Ivory Coast against Somalia in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

The recently arrived Real Madrid player is capable of operating on the right, but the left side is where he has made the strongest impression. That was evident again on Tuesday, when he played a prominent role for Ivory Coast despite facing a Somalia side set up to defend in numbers.

According to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Diomande’s display has renewed a question being asked by many observers: should Real Madrid manager Mourinho leave Vinicius Junior on the bench and give Diomande the starting role on the left of the attack?

Ivory Coast were not facing one of the strongest opponents, but Somalia’s compact defensive approach presented a demanding challenge for a player such as Diomande. Breaking down a packed defence requires individual skill, movement and the ability to create openings, and the Real Madrid winger showed all three.

Diomande completed five of his six dribbles, had three shots and created three further chances for his team-mates. He did not score or provide an assist, but he delivered something particularly valuable in matches of this type: a consistent ability to create opportunities.

When defenders applied pressure, Diomande moved inside to find space. When room opened up, he took on opponents, and his involvement frequently changed the flow of the attack. His willingness to influence the game helped improve Ivory Coast’s play.

Mundo Deportivo contrasted that impact with Vinicius’ recent performances, describing the Brazilian as ineffective when he has appeared for either Real Madrid or Brazil.

Diomande also appeared to play with considerable confidence. If Mourinho gives him regular minutes, the winger may not need an extended adaptation period or a long run of cautious performances before showing his best form.

Vinicius remains an outstanding footballer and has demonstrated his quality on the pitch. However, the newspaper believes it has been a long time since he consistently reached his highest level. In a fast-moving football environment, the possibility of Vinicius beginning matches as a substitute for Real Madrid may therefore become increasingly realistic.

Diomande’s performance on 29 September 2026 has not settled the contest for the left-wing position, but it has made the decision more difficult for Mourinho.
