2023 Afcon qualifiers: Nigeria records biggest home win in 45 years

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria recorded its biggest home win in 45 years as they ended their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying round on a high note.
The Super Eagles thrashed Sao Tome and Principe   6-0 in front of over 30,000 fans at the Godwill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Sunday afternoon.
A hat-trick from Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen and a goal each from Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi, and substitute, Samuel Chukwueze ensured the team finished with an aggregate 16-0 scoreline.
The 6-0 win is the widest margin win the Nigerian recorded since beating Benin Republic 7-0 in an All Africa Games qualifying match on 14 January 1978.
The scoreline against Sao Tome & Principe is only comparable with that of Burkina Faso who pulled a goal back in a 7-1 rout in Lagos in 1991.
The Eagles ended the qualifying campaign with 15 points, scoring 22 goals, and conceding 4 as they finished top of Group A ahead of Guinea Bissau.
