2023 African Games: Holders Falconets to battle for gold with Ghana

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The Nigeria women’s U-20 national team is set to reignite their rivalry with Ghana as they face off in the final of the football event at the 2023 Africa Games.

Both teams secured their spots in the final by winning their respective semi-final matches with similar goal margins.

Nigeria defeated Uganda 2-0, courtesy of goals from Okah Adaobi and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, while Ghana overcame Senegal 3-1.

Tracy Twum opened the scoring for Ghana in the 18th minute, followed by a goal from Ophelia Amponsah just before halftime.

Although Senegal’s Roukhyatou Kande pulled one back, Amponsah’s second goal secured Ghana’s 3-1 victory.

The final match sets the stage for a thrilling showdown, reigniting the recent rivalry between the two sides.

Ghana narrowly defeated Nigeria on penalties in the final of the inaugural West African Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions in Ghana last year.

With the stakes high, Christopher Danjuma’s Nigerian side will be aiming to reclaim the gold medal they clinched in 2019, making the final clash an eagerly anticipated encounter.
