2026 FIFA WCQ: Super Eagles confident ahead of crucial clash with Benin Republic

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has assured Nigerians that his team will give their all to secure a vital victory over the Cheetahs of Benin Republic as the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign reaches its decisive final matchday on Tuesday.

The crucial encounter, scheduled for the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, sees Nigeria fighting to keep their qualification hopes alive while also relying on a favorable result in Nelspruit, where South Africa will host Rwanda.

Group C leaders Benin Republic, with 17 points, control their destiny. A win in Uyo would see them qualify for their first-ever FIFA World Cup, capping a historic campaign under former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr.

The Cheetahs’ impressive run has put them two points clear at the summit, meaning even a draw could suffice if South Africa fails to defeat Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium.

Nigeria, however, is determined to prevent that outcome. The Super Eagles have not missed two consecutive World Cup tournaments since their debut in 1994 and Chelle’s squad is fully aware of the weight of history on their shoulders.

Despite sitting third in the group, Nigeria remain the most resilient side among the three contenders for the sole qualification spot, having lost only once—fewer than both Benin Republic and South Africa, who have each suffered two defeats.

Chasing their seventh World Cup appearance, the Super Eagles know that a two-goal victory over Benin Republic, combined with a draw or loss for South Africa, could secure their passage to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For Chelle and his players, the mission is clear: deliver a commanding performance in Uyo and keep Nigeria’s World Cup dream alive.
