2026 WCQ: “We’ll give everything to take Benin to the World Cup” – Steve Mounié

By Dayo Awoniyi

Benin Republic captain Steve Mounié has declared that his side will leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of a historic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they prepare to face Nigeria’s Super Eagles in a crucial Group C encounter next week.

The high-stakes match is set for the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, with both teams still firmly in the race for Africa’s single automatic qualification spot in the group.

Speaking to Nigeria Footballng, the talismanic striker emphasized the significance of the fixture for Benin Republic, who are on the verge of making their first-ever appearance at a FIFA World Cup.

“We play football for this kind of match. It will be a historic meeting. We will give everything to take Benin to the World Cup,” Mounié said.

Benin currently leads Group C with 17 points from nine matches, while Nigeria sits third with 14 points.

A draw or victory in Uyo would keep the Cheetahs in pole position heading into the final round, while a defeat could significantly jeopardize their qualification hopes.

The mood in the Beninese camp is one of belief and ambition, especially following their dramatic 2–1 win over Nigeria in June — a result that shifted the momentum in the group.

Drawing inspiration from his club career at Stade Brest in France, Mounié urged his teammates to play without fear.

“At Brest, we stood toe-to-toe with the biggest clubs. I told the boys we can do the same against Nigeria,” he added.

As the final round of matches approaches, Mounié’s rallying cry reflects a growing sense of confidence in a team determined to etch its name in West African football history.
