2026 World Cup Qualifier: Calvin Bassey stays positive about Nigeria’s position

By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey remains unperturbed by the Super Eagles’ third-place position in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group.
The Super Eagles have yet to meet expectations, currently sitting third in Group C behind South Africa and table-toppers Rwanda. However, Bassey insists that the team’s current ranking does not affect them mentally, emphasizing that they have not lost any games so far.
The Fulham center-back is confident that the blend of experience and young talent within the squad will lead to success in the World Cup qualifiers.
“Being in third spot in the table doesn’t put us under any pressure because we haven’t lost any game and I think everyone knows how good we are now. Everyone doubted us at the AFCON, but we were able to get to the final,” Bassey was quoted by the NFF.
“I don’t think we’ve shown all we have yet. We still have more games to go. We’ve got a team that’s been together for two years, and we are building something.
“People forget that even though we have experienced players, we are still a young team. It’s just about working hard, making sure we capitalize on vital moments in the game, and taking our chances. God willing, we’ll come away with three points.”
The former Ajax star expressed his excitement about the support the Eagles will receive in Uyo, believing it will spur them to victory.
“It’s always a confidence booster to have our nation behind us and supporting us. It is always a boost for us. Of course, we are looking forward to the game as well.”
The Super Eagles will be looking to change their standing status in Group C with a win against South Africa on home ground.
